How to adjust the valve of diesel engine?

It is very important to adjust the intake and exhaust valve head clearance when assemble the diesel engine. After it, the valve must be checked and readjustment on a regular time, normally, is at 25 days after diesel engine running. Failure to adjust the right clearance of valve would cause engine damage, like overheating and combustion problem leading diesel engine that may show as black smoke.

So, how to adjust the diesel engine valve space is very important. Firstly, you need to remove the valve rocker arm cover, however, you should be very careful to avoid to damage the gasket under the valve. Second, pull the starter to set the piston to top dead center on the compression stroke. Check and adjust the exhaust and intake valve head space. Loosen the lock nut and use a feeler gauge to adjust the valve adjustment screw until you feel a slight drag on the feeler gauge, normally. the space is 0.15mm-0.2mm.

Set Gap Between Valve Spring and Rocker Arm is a very good idea to measure the gap accurately, if it is too loose or if the feeler is squeezed too tight, forcing the valve to open slightly against the force of the valve spring, the reading will not be accurate. With the feeler in place, hold the screw adjuster in place while tightening the jam nut. Recheck the clearance to make sure it did not move when tightening the jam nut.
